It seems like winter has decided to show it’s face for good. These dark days, strong winds and cool breezes call for a delicious cup of steaming hot chocolate. Not the store-bought package kind that is full of preservatives and has a dull chocolate taste, but one that’s rich and homemade. All you need is three health benefiting ingredients, a dash of vanilla and a few spare minutes.
Almond milk – great alternative to dairy milk, almond milk contains calcium, vitamin E and magnesium which help lower cholesterol levels, along with manganese and riboflavin for energy production.
Cacao powder – cacao is raw chocolate and is loaded with beneficial antioxidants, magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron. Antioxidants help protect the body from free radical damage and premature aging, while essential minerals help with energy production.
Raw Honey – unpasteurized honey is a great stable to have in your pantry. It is naturally antimicrobial and has been shown to help reduce seasonal allergies and sooth sore throats. PErfect for this time of year – still cold but approaching spring and the season of allergies.
Hot Chocolate:
3 cups almond milk
2 tbsp cacao powder
2-4 tbsp honey (depending on preferred level of sweetness)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Directions:
1. Heat almond milk in a small sauce pan on medium low heat for a couple of minutes, stirring frequently.
2. Add cacao powder and honey. Stir frequently to prevent it from burning.

*looking for something a little more decadent…sprinkle a few chocolate chips on each mug before serving.
Enjoy!
